Winter is finally over, the sun is shining, and the temperature is slowly rising, all of which can mean only one thing: The race for Song of the Summer has officially begun!
The legendary Miss Britney Spears has brought her A-game — not to mention current titleholder Iggy Azalea — to this year’s battle, with her latest single, “Pretty Girls,” which was released on Monday at midnight. The track originally leaked on Saturday, though Azalea, who dominated airwaves last summer with “Fancy,” encouraged fans to hold on a little bit longer until it was officially dropped at the start of the week. Still, it seems to have been more than worth the wait, thanks to its super-catchy chorus and bouncing beat.
Learn the words now, because it’s all you’ll be singing for the next four months.
Of course, for Spears’ devoted following, “Pretty Girls” marks more than just the summer kickoff we’ve been waiting for. It’s also the pop princess’ first official music release since 2013’s Britney Jean. And if you’ve been desperate to hear Brit’s iconic voice on the radio once more, you’re definitely not the only one. Even Azalea herself has been tweeting about how exciting it’s been to hear the return of everyone’s favorite pop star.
By the way, that second voice harmonizing with Spears on the chorus? That’s actually Azalea, living the dream of ’90s kids everywhere.
The song’s release is just the first step in total summer radio domination for Azalea and Spears. The pair will perform “Pretty Girls” for the very first time at this year’s Billboard Music Awards on May 17, and they have a totally tubular, technicolor video for the single ready to drop at any given moment… and considering that fans’ excitement has just gotten bigger and bigger since they were first spotted on the set last month, that’s a very good thing.
Looks like the summer of 2015 is going to be very pretty indeed.
